Helen Hardin
United States, 1943 - 1984
Helen Hardin was a Native American Pueblo painter born in New Mexico on May 28,
1943. Her father worked as a government employee, her mother was the Pueblo
painter Pablita Velarde.
She attended high school in New Mexico and was awarded an Indian Art project
scholarship in 1960. This influenced her decision to turn her art into a career. She is
one of the most widely known Pueblo painters, incorporating ancient and traditional
Native American figures and symbols into her individual style of painting. She
worked in acrylics, casein, pen and ink, and had begun working with etchings shortly
before she died.
