Hung Liu

Hung Liu (hung loo) was born on February 17, 1948, in Changchun, China. Liu’s
father, Xia Peng, was a captain in the Kuomintang army. Her mother, Liu
ZongGuang, was a middle school teacher. In 1968, Liu was sent for proletarian
“reeducation” among the peasants in the countryside, where she worked in rice and
wheat fields seven days a week for four years. She also photographed and drew
portraits of local farmers and their families.
In 1972, Liu entered the Revolutionary Entertainment Department of Beijing
Teachers’ College to study art and art education. In 1975, she graduated and began
teaching art at the Jingshan School, an elite Beijing school. She was asked to teach
children’s art on national television and gave weekly lessons from the studios of the
Central China Television station. She has received numerous awards, and her work
has been exhibited internationally.
