Artists and Cultural Profiles

George Milpurrurru
Australia, 1934 – 1998

An artist who created traditional bark painting, George Milpurrurru was a leader in
religious ceremonies in aboriginal Australia. He was a hunter, healer, and performed
in ceremonial dances. His work serves as an example of the religious and spiritual
expression of his people.

Milpurrurru carefully retained a traditional approach to his bark painting. He includes
the symbolic motifs and repeated patterns used in sacred paintings, rituals, and
ceremonies. He has succeeded as a contemporary artist while maintaining the
traditional themes of the aboriginal culture.

The National Gallery of Australia showcased his work in a solo exhibition, and his
work has been displayed in the United States and Europe, including an installation at
the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
