Eliot Porter
United States, 1901–1990

Eliot Porter, who was born in 1901 and died in 1990, was a nature photographer who
pictures show a clear emphasis on birds, wild animals, insects, and landscapes. He
also did extensive archaeological and architectural work in Greece, Egypt, and
Mexico.

He was born in Illinois and earned a bachelor’s of science degree and a doctor of
medicine, both from Harvard. He worked as a tutor and instructor at Harvard from
1930 to 1939, when he decided to turn his hobby (photographing birds) into a
career. He has had more than 20 books published, and his work has appeared on
numerous periodicals.
