Robert Silvers
United States, b. 1968
Photomosaics are the invention of Robert Silvers, a graduate of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Media Lab, who uses digitized photographs and a
software program he developed for this unusual application.
Silvers created the software in 1995 as part of an MIT class project, having joined
forces with a fellow student who was categorizing photos into a database. Following
graduation, he turned his idea into a company (Runaway Technology) to create and
license the photomosaics. Over the last few years, he has produced covers for Wired
and Newsweek magazines. Many of his pieces can be found in the book
Photomosaics, a compilation of his work detailing 28 different projects.
