Unit 4 Real-World Unit Projects
Problem Solving in Industrial Education: A New Zoo
Task | Process | Guidance | Resources | Conclusion
Task
- You have been assigned to design a new zoo on 70 acres for your town. As you set up your zoo, choose the zoo animals and find the appropriate size of their habitats. Then set up a feeding schedule and temperature settings that suits all of the animals. Let's go get started!
- Create a presentation that shows the blueprint of your zoo including the dimensions, areas, surface areas, and volumes.
Process
1a. Choose 15 animals that will fit into the zoo's 70 acres. Once you have chosen your animals, create a spreadsheet of your purchases.
1b. Use the Internet to research the average weight, the average lifespan, and the average incubation period for each chosen animal.
1c. Create one table that displays all of your collected data.
- name of each animal,
- average weight of each animal,
- average lifespan of each animal,
- average incubation period of each animal.
1d. Based on the data in the table, determine how large each living area is for each animal. Make sure it fits in the total acreage.
1e. Finally, research how often each animal needs to be fed and what temperature it lives in. Place the animals accordingly.
2. Prepare a presentation that displays the drawings and blueprint of the zoo you designed. Be sure to include the feeding schedules and temperature conditions for the animals. Also include the dimensions, area, surface area, area and volumes on the blueprint and drawings.
Guidance
- Your table should include 15 animals and the following data:
- Average weight,
- Average lifespan, and
- Average incubation period.
- Your drawings or blueprints should include all dimensions, areas, surface areas, and volumes of each section. Also include feeding schedules and temperature conditions for each animal.
Resources
Use the internet to research keywords such as zoos and animal habitats.
Conclusion
We hoped you enjoyed the chance to design a zoo! What an intricate process to create such a fun and educational environment. Next time you go to the zoo, take a moment to realize your surrounding and everything that goes into making it possible!
