Unit 3 Real-World Unit Projects

Problem Solving in Science: Turn Over a New Leaf

Task | Process | Guidance | Resources | Conclusion

Task
  1. Collect a variety of different-sized leaves. Record the characteristics of each leaf including color, length, width, and texture. Then calculate the leaf's volume and surface area. After finding the measurements, you will analyze and compare the data. Finally, you will research the anatomy of leaves.
  2. Use the information you have gathered to prepare a graphic organizer. Be sure to include leaf samples and the appropriate calculations for your project.
Process
1a.  Gather 10 leaves from outside your school or neighborhood. Record your measurements and observations in a table. Using a centimeter ruler, measure the length and width of each leaf.
1b.  Calculate each leaf's volume and surface area, and record it into a table accordingly.
1c.  Write a 1-2 paragraph comparison of the leaves. Research why they are flat and why surface area and volume are important to a leaf.
1d.  Create a graphic organizer that will summarize all of your information and data. Your presentation should include leaf samples and your calculations that went along with your work.

Guidance
  1. Use the table below to record your observations about the 10 leaves you collected. Be detailed in your observation since it will help you later.

Conclusion
Congratulations! You have successfully completed your botanist tasks! Using your mathematical tools, you have witnessed the power and importance of mathematics in the real- world. Volume and surface area are all around us in all that we do. Keep up the good work!
