The Irish Famine

Irish Americans
The Irish were not newcomers to the United States. They had
been part of our history ever since colonial times. But Irish
immigration reached record numbers during the Great Famine.
Immigration from Ireland continued at high levels into the next
century.
Where did the Irish settle when they arrived? Everywhere. Records
kept at the Library of Congress show settlement patterns among
the Irish as well as figures highlighting the great boom in
immigration in the mid-1800s. Click on one of the Library's
maps entitled: "1880: Irish in America"
to see settlement patterns and a statistical graph. Use the
zoom feature to look at your own area. What conclusions can
you draw about the effects of the Great Famine on the cultural
history of our nation?
To learn more about the Irish in America, spend time browsing
through the "American
Memory" feature that profiles the history and contributions
of Irish Americans from the past to the present.
