Compact version!

Like its larger counterpart, the compact Literature: Approaches to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama by Robert DiYanni features student-centered approaches to literature--from experience to interpretation to evaluation--and an emphasis on making connections between texts and thinking critically about literature.

Known for its clear presentation of the formal elements of literature and literary analysis, this compact anthology effectively balances classic, modern, and contemporary works across the three major genres, blending well-known writers with a diverse gathering of newer, international figures. This literary breadth is supplemented by extensive coverage of writing about literature, making this book an excellent text for introduction to literature courses as well as literature-based composition courses.

ARIEL: A Reader's Interactive Exploration of American Literature (ARIEL American) CD–ROM: This integrated multimedia resource enriches students' experience of American literature with casebooks on 28 American writers, video, music, readings of poems and stories, dozens of images, illustrated timelines, interactive exercises, and more! In the anthology, boxes indicate where more material is found on the CD–ROM.

Features:

Emphasis on Critical Thinking: The second edition features an expanded emphasis on thinking critically about literature and information on arguing about literature. The thoroughly revised introduction explains to students the importance of thinking critically and helps them develop strategies that will get them thinking critically about literature. The critical thinking component is reinforced in Questions for Critical Thinking and Writing that appear throughout the text, for works in every genre.

New Chapters on Envisioning Literature: Each genre features new visual chapters that show how artists visually interpret that genre. Chapter 28: Envisioning Drama shows students with reproductions and photographs how Glass Menagerie and Death of a Salesman went from sketches to staged performances. Chapter 15: Envisioning Poetry places poems and paintings side-by-side so students can compare how words interact with images. Chapter 6: Envisioning Narrative shows students how graphic novelists use narration in illustrated stories.

New Short Stories: The fifteen new stories include both essential works--such as "The Lady with the Little Dog" by Chekov, "The Storm" by Chopin, and "The Chrysanthemums" by Steinbeck--and works by contemporary authors, like Gish Jen and Jhumpa Lahiri.

New Poems: The over eighty new poems include new selections by such important poets as Randall Jarrell, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, and Elizabeth Bishop and contemporary selections by such contemporary poets as Billy Collins, Deborah Garrison, and Taylor Mali.

New Plays: Two new plays are featured in the second edition: Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and The Cuban-Swimmer by Milcha Sanchez-Scott.
